Hungry Horse Dam:
At the time of completion it was the fourth largest dam in the world.
It is an arch-gravity type dam that is 2,225 feet in length at its crest. There is a highway across the top that is 30 feet wide. It is 3,565 feet above sea level.
It was named after two work horses that wandered away during the severe winter of 1900-01. After they survived for a month in belly deep snow they were found. They were so weak that they took a great deal of care and feeding before they could be led back to civilization.
If you take the road that continues across the dam you can drive around Hungry Horse reservoir created by the dam. The reservoir is approximately 34 miles long and about 3 miles wide at its widest point. If you drive to the south end you can continue to Spotted Bear Ranger Station - a jump off point into the area along the South Fork of the Flathead River.
Spotted Bear Ranger Station:
Located along the South Fork of the Flathead River, at the south end of Hungry Horse Reservoir, it is a starting point for trips into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. You can visit the Swing Bridge over the beautiful Gorge or enjoy fishing along the South Fork.
Jewel Basin:
Jewel Basin is a popular hiking area in Northwest Montana accessed from the South Fork Road along Hungry Horse Reservoir of from FS Road 5392 just east of Echo Lake.
